The executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission Keith Kizer has revealed that that Mexico’s Manuel “Chango” Vargas who fought WBA super flyweight interim champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire last February 13 at the Las Vegas Hilton “is on temporary suspension until there can be a hearing on the disciplinary complaint.”
Kizer told us earlier that the Mexican had “tested positive for hydrocodone and a complaint has been issued against him.”
We received the news of Vargas’ temporary suspension even as Donaire and the Filipino boxers featured on the “Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury 13” fight card at the Las Vegas Hilton were to be feted at the executive dining room of the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN which telecast the fights in the Philippines and on its widely watched global channel TFC.
Aside from Donaire and wife Rachael, former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa who most media believe was robbed of the decision in a majority decision loss to Eric Morel and his wife Goody will also be in attendance along with featherweight Bernabe Concepcion and welterweight Mark Jason Melligen.
Efforts to contact Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales who suffered a crushing first round knockout at the hands of WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel proved futile.
Donaire hammered Vargas into submission in three rounds in the main event of the "Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury 13" Top Rank fight card which was telecast over the pre-eminent Channel 2 and delivered excellent ratings.
A description of the drug taken by Vargas, Hydrocodone, says “some hydrocodone products are used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Other hydrocodone products are used to relieve cough.”
The drug is in a class of medications called opiate (narcotic) analgesics and in a class of medications called antitussives.” Hydrocodone relieves pain by changing the way the brain and nervous system respond to pain.
The former IBF/IBO flyweight champion who burst onto the boxing scene with a sensational 5th round, one punch knockout of Vic Darchinyan in July 2007 said “that’s why I was hitting him with good counter rights and in the second round his mouth was open but I know he wasn’t tired and I know I dislocated his jaw.”
Donaire also described the delayed knockdown in the third round as “an odd thing” and added “he was taking a lot of my punches and its probably because he didn’t feel it.”
