President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has requested Z “The Dream” Gorres to meet her on her arrival at the Cebu City airport this afternoon.
The President who has consistently shown her support for our boxers and other athletes is aware of Gorres’ tragic accident that ended his career last November and would obviously wish to find out how well Gorres, the stylish southpaw, is recovering from brain surgery.
Gorres underwent surgery at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas after he scored a rousing ten round decision over rugged Luis Melendez of Colombia at the Mandalay Bay House of Blues but collapsed in his corner and underwent brain surgery.
His recovery has bordered on the miraculous and Gorres who was on the threshold of a world title rematch against Fernando Montiel when his career was tragically cut short is undergoing therapy and coming around nicely.
Gorres’ spirits were also given a major lift when WBA interim super flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and wife Rachael who visited Gorres in Cebu last week, kept their commitment to help him.
Gorres received P350,000 (ABOUT $7,500) with Donaire contributing P250,000 and his wife Rachael adding another P100,000 in a gesture that not merely touched Gorres and his wife Datches but all those who learned of the commendable gesture of Donaire and his wife.
