SONSONA WILL TRY HIS BEST TO LOOK FOR A KNOCKOUT

“Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona who faces Wilfredo Vazquez Jr in a battle of undefeated fighters says he will “try his best to look for a knockout” in his WBO super bantamweight championship bout in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on Sunday, Manila Time.
In an interview following a workout Sonsona, speaking through promoter Sammy Gello-ani who acted as interpreter said “I will look for a knockout because this is the place of Vazquez and the only way to really convince the fans that I can give a good fight is to look go for a knockout so that it will be a convincing win.”
Sonsona who is looking to win a second world title in six months having previously won the WBO super flyweight crown with a rousing twelve round decision over another Puerto Rican, Jose “Carita” Lopez last September said past records will not influence him but “he will win and whatever opportunity comes along the way he will take the chance and put pressure on Vazquez.”
Noting that Vazquez Jr who is the son of the illustrious former world champion Wilfredo Vazquez Sr is looking to make history as the first father-and-son tandem from Puerto Rico to win world titles, Sonsona said ‘I am also looking for history by becoming the first Filipino to win a title here in Puerto Rico, the hometown of his opponent. Hopefully I will be able to do it for my country, the Philippines.”
The 19 year old southpaw from General Santos City said he had watched a tape of Vazquez’ last fight and indicated “it will help me because I know the style of Vazquez already.”
For his part Vazquez, in an interview with Boxeomundial.com said that by looking at the record of Sonsona (14-0-1, 12 KO’s) “it's obvious this kid can punch” but pointed out that not all boxers have that KO punch as “some fighters have other abilities and I believe I have those abilities in my favor in this bout. I cam box and punch. I am ready physically.”
Vazquez conceded that the only difference was that Sonsona is a southpaw but emphasized “I just hope he comes in well prepared because I have the punch and I’m physically ready. I am ready f or the bell to ring and I will be pressing him from rounds one through twelve. If the KO comes sooner that’s better but I am ready and have trained to go twelve full rounds.”
Vazquez who told boxeomundial.com that he had seen Sonsona’s fight when he won the 115 pound title from Carita Lopez noted that the Filipino was “a good boxer” but emphasize d that “there are a lot of boxers who are good but don’t put the work in. I work full time.”
Vazquez who is undefeated like Sonsona and enters the ring in a fight to be telecast in the Philippines by Solar Sports with a record of 17-0-1 with 14 knockouts said “the prize always comes to the one who’s worked the hardest and I know how hard I’ve worked. This kid (Sonsona) is good but I am 150 percent confident that he will have problems on Saturday night.”
