Charly Suarez.
Filipino featherweight Charly Suarez gets a big boost in the Philippines Olympic gold medal quest with the biggest security company in the world G4S sponsoring the talented 22 year old as he prepares for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Former Australian boxer and current trainer/manager Terrance Mogg who lives and works in Manila was asked to scout for a prospect from the Philippines and Mogg chose Suarez by G4S.
Mogg told us “the company has a program where 14 athletes from all over the world are chosen for the program and they spend a considerable amount of money trying to help them win medals in the next Olympics.”
Mogg said he was “asked to select an amateur boxer to go into the program and that was the first step and Charly was the guy that I picked.”
He said that at a function at the residence of the British Ambassador Stephen Lillie on Wednesday evening “they are actually going to introduce Charly to the world.” Mogg said the Filipino boxer will be introduced by Haile Gebreselassie, the famous Ethiopian long distance track and road running athlete who has won major events at distances from 1,500 meters and the marathon and has broken 27 world records while winning numerous Olympic and World Championship titles. Haile Gebreselassie is regarded as one of the greatest distance runners in history.
We ourselves were fortunate to cover Haile Gebreselassie’s gold medal victory in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games alongside former POC president Christy Ramos which was telecast in the Philippines over the government network NBN 4.
Mogg disclosed that aside from Suarez other selected athletes at the affair would include an Indian girl, a Grecio-Roman wrestler from Peru and a crack Nigerian sprinter.
The 22 year old Suarez is considered one of the most promising young fighters in the development program of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines under esteemed businessman-sportsman Manny Pangilinan who is chairman of ABAP and top PLDT-Smart executive Ricky Vargas who is president.
Vargas was clearly elated over the support extended to Suarez but regrettably will not be able to attend the af fair since he is celebrating his birthday with a family dinner. However, Vargas told us that ABAP Executive director Ed Picson and secretary general Pato Gregorio will attend.
Suarez was the country’s most impressive fighter at the AIBA World Championships in Milan last September and his goal is to win the country’s first Olympic gold medal with the Philippines having won silver medals in the 1064 Tokyo Olympics with Anthony Villanueva and at Atlanta in 1996 courtesy of Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco.
