Undefeated Filipino super bantamweight Balweg “The Davao Hitman” Bangoyan gets a shot at WBC champion Toshiaki Nishioka who is also undefeated in a big double-header at the Budokan Hall in Tokyo on April 30.
In the other title fight WBC bantamweight champion Hozumi Hasegawa (28-2, 12 KOs), makes his eleventh defense against WBO champion Fernando Montiel (40-2-2, 30 KOs) in a unification bout. Montiel is coming off a devastating 1st round KO of inexperienced and withered Ciso "Kid Terrible" Montiel who lost 12 pounds in six days to be able to make weight in the "Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury 13" Top Rank card at the Las Vegas Hilton on February 19.
Well known boxing manager/ matchmaker and Hall-of-Fame journalist Joe Koizumi reported that the fight card was announced by the renowned Teiken Promotions of influential Japanese businessman-sportsman Akihiko Honda.
In a battle of undefeated fighters Bangoyan who has a record of 15-0 with 7 knockouts will go up against the WBC 122 pound champion, the hard-hitting and far more experienced Nishioka who has a record of 35-4-3 with 22 knockouts.
The 33 year old Nishioka won the title when he knocked out former world bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez with a vicious left in a title fight in Mexico last May. The Japanese got off the canvas in the opening round after being decked by Gonzales, the former bantamweight champion who lost his title to Filipino southpaw Gerry Penalosa by a one-punch 7th round knockout on August 11, 2007, but caught Gonzalez with a vicious left straight as referee Kenny Bayless waived it off when it became clear Gonzalez was unable to continue.
Bangoyan is the WBC International champion and is currently rated No. 11 by the World Boxing Council. He won the title with a 5th round technical decision over defending champion Sande Otieno in Davao City on October 10, 2008 with the 48-45 shutout scorecards of the three Filipino judges Ver Abainza, Virgilio Garcia and Alberto Dulalas considered controversial.
Bangoyan was scheduled to defend his title in his US debut against Alejandro Perez in Las Vegas on May 1, 2009 but he apparently had problems getting his visa on time and the fight was called off.
Due to his long layoff the Filipino was stripped of his title in June 2009 but after a ten round decision over veteran journeyman Jaime Barcelona on June 27, 2009 Bangoyan regained the vacant title with a twelve round majority decision over Raymond Sermona on September 12, 2009 in Manila. Bangoyan is managed by former singer turned Mayor, Zander Khan of the municipality of Jose Abad Santos in Davao.
