“Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona came in at 126 pounds at the official weigh in one week before his WBA super bantamweight title fight against undefeated Wilfredo Vazquez Jr of Puerto Rico indicating the Filipino southpaw has no weight problems.
Sonsona's handlers led by promoter Sammy Gello-ani and trainer Nonito Donaire Sr have expressed confidence in Sonsona's ability to not only make the 122 pound limit handily but to also win a second world title in less than six months.
The task won't be easy against Vazquez Jr, son of the illustrious former world champion who is regarded as one of the best fighters among the sons of former world champions.
Sonsona’s weight is very different from that of Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales who was 12 pounds over the bantamweight limit just six days before his title fight with WBO champion Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel and had to virtually starve for a week to make the weight.
The weight loss drained and weakened Morales who went down in agony after receiving one vicious blow to the mid-section in the opening round and was knocked out.
Sonsona who trained with Morales at the Kennel Boxing Gym in California under Nonito Donaire Sr looked good in a workout at the Wilfredo Gomez Gym in Guaynabo following his arrival in Puerto Rico with Donaire Sr and Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani.
Sonsona who is undefeated with a record of (14-0-1, 12 KO’s) is looking to win his second world title in less than six months having won the WBO super flyweight crown with a smashing twelve round decision over Jose “Carita” Lopez also of Puerto Rico last September.
Sonsona’s opponent Wilfredo Vazquez Jr who weighed in at 127 is also undefeated with a record of 17-0-1, 14 knockouts.
Sonsona lost the title when he failed to make the weight in his first title defense last November at the Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada which was the same venue where he won the title.
When we spoke to Sonsona in Las Vegas before he left for Puerto Rico he said he was in great shape for the title fight both physically and mentally and pointed out he had gone twelve rounds with no trouble, adding "I am extremely fit and ready for the title fight."
