DONAIRE ARRIVES IN MANILA ON FRIDAY

WBA sper flyweight interim champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and his wife Rachael are scheduled to arrive in Manila on Friday at 10:30 a.m. via Hong Kong, for a visit.

Donaire who destroyed Mexican Manuel “Chango” Vargas in three rounds at the “Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury 13” fight card at the Las Vegas Hilton Pavilion on February 13 is expected to visit relatives and friends and take a brief rest before plunging into training for his next fight.

There has been no word yet on whether Donaire will stay at 115 pounds to give cocky Vic Darchinyan a rematch or move up to bantamweight for what could be a terrific fight with Mexico’ WBO champion Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel.

Donaire and promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank have clearly been turned off by the uncalled for remarks by Darchinyan and may not be inclined to give him a rematch since Donaire blasted him the first time they met in July 7, 2007 scoring a fifth round knockout which was named “Knockout of the Year.”

The easier fight to make would be against Mexican warrior Jorge Arce, the reigning WBO super flyweight champion in case Donaire wants to grab a second belt in his quest to follow the blueprint set by pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao or go after Montiel’s title at 118 pounds.

Donaire has repeatedly said he would fight anybody his manager Cameron Dunkin and promoter Bob Arum put in front of him but right now it seems Montiel looms as favorite for a title shodown.

Montiel scored a crushing first round knockout over previously undefeated Filipino Cis “Kid Terrible” Morales who crumbled to the canvas from a solid shot to the mid-section.

Montiel, clearly dehydrated and weakened by having to shed 12 pounds in six days was not match for the hard-hitting Montiel while Donaire was a class above Vargas which makes a Donaire-Montiel fight something to look forward to.
