Philippine bantamweight champion Eden Sonsona gets a big break when he fights on the undercard of “The Event” where “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao defends his WBO welterweight title against Joshua Clottey at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium on March 13.
Sonsona will take on former IBA super flyweight and bantamweight champion Mauricio Pastrana, the 37 year old veteran who has fought some of the best in his weight divisions and has a record of 35-12-2 with 23 knockouts.
Pastrana even won by a tenth round TKO over Gerson Guerrero who was scheduled to fight Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire on Saturday in Las Vegas but had to pull out because of a tear in the retina of his right eye.
In his last fight Pastrana dropped a twelve round unanimous decision to Leon Moore in a WBC Continental Americas and NABF title fight on September 26, 2009.
Although he lost to some big name fighters like Celestino Caballero, Rafael Marquez and Jhonny Gonzalez, Pastrana gave then a rough time before going down.
Sonsona is a prot?g? of the late Rod Nazario, longtime father-figure and business manager of Pacquiao who committed to give Sonsona a break on the undercard of the Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight and kept his promise.
Sonsona pleased Pacquiao with his performance, scoring an impressive 2nd round TKO over Eilon Kedem last November 14.
Shortly afterwards the dazzling southpaw Sonsona scored a spectacular 1st round knockout over Monico Laurente to win the Philippine bantamweight title on December 12, 2009.
Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz who gave us the information on the Sonsona fight said Dennis Laurente, the 32 year old light welterweight will battle Ghana’s Ben Tackie in an eight round bout on the eve of the Pacquiao-Clottey title fight.
Laurente has a record of 33-3-5, 17th knockouts while Tackie will enter the ring with a record of 29-11-1, 17 KO’s.
