A benefit boxing card aimed at raising funds to help former world champ Luisito Espinosa in his legal battle is set to take shape on October 22 featuring no less than a Philippine championship tiff in the main event.
North Cotabato Governor Emmanuel Pi?ol, together with columnist Recah Trinidad, BID Commissioner Al Fernandez and Espinosa's former manager Hermie Rivera, will be putting up the event at the New San Andres Civic and Sports Center in Manila with proceeds to be used for Espinosa's legal expenses as he tries to collect an unpaid $150,000 purse owed him for his 1997 defense against Carlos Rios in South Cotabato.
"Luisito deserves justice and I and a few friends are willing to support him, especially now that he needs it to redeem himself," Pi?ol stated. "It is unimaginable or even incredible that a case with facts this clear would drag on for eight years. This is the height of injustice inflicted on a former champion who brought so much honor and happy moments for the country," he added.
The card will topbill the Philippine lightweight championship between RP titlist Fernando Montilla and Cebu-based Dexter Delada, as well as the
Philippine jr. bantamweight title defense of champion Eric Barcelona, who is from Bukidnon.
The fight card will also showcase Mindanao?s best boxers today against fighters from Luzon and Visayas. Fans will have the opportunity to see budding boxing stars from Mindanao like bantamweight Glenn Porras, jr. flyweight Dennis Juntillano, undefeated miniflyweight Tommy Terado, Rex Penalosa who is also a minifflyweight and 19-year-old Ervin Dapudong of North Cotabato.
"If justice has eluded Luisito for the last eight years, he is now assured that in this toughest fight of his life, he will not be alone inside the ring," Pi?ol said.
