Well known Australian promoter Peter Maniatis says WBA Interim super flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is being enticed to fight world champion Vic Darchinyan in Sydney, Australia in July.
Maniatis told us that Australian promoters are hoping to get the blockbuster rematch on the undercard of a fight to be headlined by popular Danny Green who recently knocked out Roy Jones Jr in one round to win the IBO cruiserweight title.
Darchinyan himself had earlier said he would like to defend his title against Donaire in Australia since he, Darchinyan, is the champion.
However, Ryan Burton of boxingscene.com says that Donaire’s manager Cameron Dunkin informed him and other members of the media at Nonito Donaire's media day in Las Vegas that promoter Gary Shaw is pushing for Donaire to fight the WBC/WBA super flyweight champion in June with Southern California being a likely landing spot for the fight.
Burton quoted Dunkin as saying "Nonito would like to get another fight in before June so we will see. He definitely wants Darchinyan. If a deal can be worked out we will make the fight at 115 where Nonito's fighting at now. Nonito really wants to be busy and fight 4 times this year."
Donaire has to first get by hard-hitting Mexican Gerson Guerrero in the “Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury 13” fight card at the Las Vegas Hilton on February 14 (Manila Time) in a fight to be telecast in the Philippines by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN.
Burton notes that should “The Filipino Flash” quickly dispose of Guerrero there is a possibility of a fight against Jorge “Travieso” Arce who has for sometime now been on Donaire’s hit list, perhaps in April.
Maniatis said that if the Donaire-Darchinyan fight happens he would obviously pick the Filipino to win but warned that he will “have to watch out early because Darchinyan’s got thunderous punches.”
He said “if Donaire stays out of harms way early, I am sure he will win the fight.”
