Z “The Dream” Gorres whose tragic accident ended his career when on the threshold of a rematch with world WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel is “doing well” according to Dr. Ben Calderon and in fact wants to be at ringside to watch undefeated youngster Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales fight Montiel on the Pinoy Power III fight card at the Las Vegas Hilton on February 13.

Morales who is presently training under Nonito Donaire Sr at the Kennel Boxing Gym in San Leandro, California stepped in as a replacement for Gorres after Montiel declined to accept Michael Domingo of the famed ALA Gym as a substitute for Gorres obviously fearing the veteran bantamweight who has been impressive in recent fights.

Gorres made the request to watch the fights during a visit by trainer Tony Martin, a longtime Cebu resident and Mark Jason Melligen who is also seeing action along with Morales and three other Filipinos on “Pinoy Power III” which will be telecast in the Philippines by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN. Dr. Calderon said Melligen who is training in Las Vegas drops by to visit Gorres from time to time.

Dr. Calderon told us that Gorres was starting to move his left hand but said his left leg “is the one that’s really weak and it will take time before he is able to walk normally.” He said Gorres is being exercised by the therapists and “is starting to gain strength.”

Dr. Calderon plans to discuss Gorres’ possible return home with Dra. Maria Stella Gaerlan-Baria who is handling Gorres’ rehab.

Initial plans were for Gorres to return home on February 15 but Dr. Calderon told us that Gorres himself wanted “to complete the rehab here (Las Vegas).” Dr. Calderon disclosed that they had “volunteer physical therapists and volunteer doctors who could attend to Gorres and there are people who even volunteer to accommodate him in their homes.”

Gorres is being aided to walk.

He said “the thing that’s really working hard for Z is the group of the Philippine Medical Association of Nevada and the Philippine Nurses Association of Nevada.” Dr. Calderon said the two groups have organized a fund-raising affair on Saturday and they are “expecting a good number of people who will be able to give some money” to help Gorres, his wife Daches and their four kids.

Dr. Calderon also praised the boxing coach of the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, Frank Slaughter, a friend of his whom he described as “one of the nicest persons here.” Slaughter was a boxer in the US Navy “who got injured and since then started to think about the plight of our fighters. He is the one really pushing the local newspapers and TV to cover the Gorres story.”

He said “our goal here is to try to agitate the Nevada State Athletic Commission about the costs of medical care of these fighters because they don’t have substantial insurance and the taxpayers are paying for them.”
