IBF light flyweight champion Brian Viloria tipped the scales without any trouble at 108 pounds in the official weigh-in at the Centennial Hall of the historic Manila Hotel but mandatory challenger Carlos Tamara of Colombia had to strip down completely after he initially weighed half-a-pound over the limit but made 108 on his second try.
Viloria who will be making his second defense of the title he won with a spectacular 11th round knockout of heavily favored Ulises Solis at the famed Araneta Coliseum last April 19 will strut his wares at the Cuneta Astrodome in Solar Sports ?Battle of the Bay? series on Saturday morning, Manila Time, so they could catch a prime time audience in the US and Latin America.
Viloria?s manager Gary Gittelsohn who planed in Thursday for the fight said 2004 Olympian Tamara is ?an excellent fighter with a very good professional record and his four losses were against world champions in two cases and the other two were against world class challengers. He?s always gone the distance, never been stopped, never been floored so Brian has a long day ahead of him tomorrow (Saturday).?
Gittelsohn said Viloria ?is in great shape and it was a a perfect camp and I can tell you that Brian is in spending shape, he came here for two weeks to g et acclimatized, he was practically on weight when he arrived and he?s done everything properly so we feel very confident about the fight.?
Viloria said he weighed 108 because he ?didn?t want to give anything to Tamara so going on weight is the best way.? Viloria told www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports ?I feel great, I?m relaxed and I wish the fight is tonight (Friday) but I have to wait another 24 hours and when the day gets here I?ll just have to take care of business.?
He said ?I did everything I needed to do in training and right now hopefully its going to show tomorrow. I am ready for this fight.
Viloria with his manager in town, trainer Robert Garcia choosing to be in his corner rather than the corner of Steven Luevano who has a tough fight defending his WBO featherweight title against Juan Manuel ?Juanma? Lopez at Madison Square Garden and girlfriend Erika Navarro by his side said ?I can?t ask for much more and I just pray to God that everything goes well. Luck comes with hard work and the harder you work the luckier you get and I have worked hard for this fight and I just want to showcase that tomorrow (Saturday.)?
Viloria said that since he is now on top he wants to stay on top although he admitted that ?its very tough that?s why I train so much harder than anything else. I know how tough it is. I?ve learned that lesson and that?s why I?ve trained for over two months.?
He said ?I am beginning to get into my own and I?m really comfortable physically, mentally and I?m at peace with myself so right now I?m just going to showcase and have fun.?
In the main supporting bout WBO minimum weight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes? planned title defense has been downgraded into a ten round bout because his opponent Jesus Silvestre of Mexico isn?t world-rated but Nietes is determined to put on a show for fight fans and predicted a knockout within seven rounds.
