Philippine bantamweight champion Eden Sonsona is being lined up for a fight in Mexico on a Top Rank card in cooperation with well-known Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran in the next couple of months.
Sonsona who left for Los Angeles with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and will train at the Wild Card Gym under Pacquiao’s Filipino trainer Restituto “Buboy” Fernandez is not likely to see action on the Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey WBO welterweight title fight on March 13 at the Dallas Cowboys stadium according to Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz.
Koncz told us from Los Angeles that should Sonsona win his next fight impressively, as he did when he scored a 2nd round TKO over Eilon Kedem in his US debut on the Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto undercard, he would get a shot at WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel.
Montiel is scheduled to defend his title against another Filipino, Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales on the “Pinoy Power III” Top Rank promotion at the Las Vegas Hilton on February 23.
However, there were reports that Morales who has fought as a featherweight may have problems making the 118 pound limit and that Sonsona may step in as a possible replacement. But Koncz said they would like to give Sonsona who won the Philippine bantamweight title with a stunning first round knockout over Monico Laurente last December 12, one more fight before he takes on the world champion Montiel.
Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani who has handled the career of Morales informed us that the undefeated youngster’s training at the Kennel Boxing Gym under Nonito Donaire Sr “is getting tougher” and that his weight is being monitored daily.
Gello-ani said that conditioning coach Arvin Jugarap “makes sure that Ciso’s weight is monitored strictly and is done daily.”
Morales was picked to face Montiel after the Mexican champion declined to fight Michael Domingo who was chosen by the ALA Gym as a replacement for original opponent Z “The Dream” Gorres whose career was cut short after a tragic accident in the ring following his masterful victory over rugged Colombian Luis Melendez last November 13 in Las Vegas.
Gorres underwent brain surgery when he collapsed in the ring after the decision was announced. He is now well on the road to recovery and may be home in mid-February according to Dr. Ben Calderon, the president of the Philippine Medical Association who is based in Las Vegas.
