Newly-crowned WBC junior flyweight king Rodel Mayol arrived in Cebu yesterday, making good on his promise to thank his fans and relatives for the support and prayers following his big upset win over erstwhile champion Edgar Sosa of Mexico.
Mayol, who arrived yesterday morning with his wife Lira and son Eizre Bryce, was met at the airport by his father Rodrigo and grandfather Domingo, whom the new world champion describes as his "no. 1 fan."
From the airport, Mayol immediately went to his family's house in Alang-Alang, Mandaue, before appearing at the SCOOP Forum hosted by Bobby Inoferio. The power-punching world boxing champion then proceeded to the Mandaue City Hall to pay a courtesy call on city mayor Jonas Cortes.
"I am here to fulfill my promise to thank my fans, who were there through my four failed world attempts, until I finally got this one. I am so thankful to all of you," Mayol stated, at the same time making special mention of sportsman Antonio L. Aldeguer, who discovered and nurtured him as a fighter.
Mayol indicated that there are feelers for him to defend his title on January 30 against Omar Nino in Mexico, but said everything is not yet set, and would rather defend his title underneath the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather superfight. He, however, said he will start his training today to keep himself in shape.
Mayol, a heavy underdog, easily defeated Edgar Sosa, who was making his eleventh title defense on Nov. 21 in Chiapas, Mexico, in what is considered to be Mayol's easiest fight.
"Even my former opponent Ivan Calderon, when he was interviewed by the Puerto Rican press, predicted that I would beat Sosa, so I think he was right coz he already felt power," recalled Mayol.
Mayol and his family are slated to fly back to Los Angeles, where they are based in the early part of January to continue his training at Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym.
