ARUM HOPES JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ GETS OFF WITH A CENSURE

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says he is hoping that the appeal of undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) on the findings that he had taken a banned diuretic would be heeded by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and that the young son of Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez will “hopefully get off with a censure.”
Arum said the problem was that NSAC was cracking down on the use of diuretics because particularly with the Mixed Martial Arts guys they were using diuretics to mask use of steroids but said that in the case of Chavez ”he never heard of a steroid and in Mexico you can use a diuretic to help you make weight.” He noted that there are “other stuff that are like diuretics which are perfectly legal to use.”
Prior to taking a return flight from Manila to Las Vegas after meeting with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao who signed off on a March 13 fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr, the Top Rank promoter who has steered the undefeated Chavez Jr to a big star in boxing revealed he had “gotten the best lawyer in town who is head of the Gaming Commission to represent Chavez and present the case to the Nevada Commission.”
He identified the lawyer as Peter Bernard who is reportedly the head of the Gaming Commission.
Arum believes that Chavez Jr’s Mexican doctor may have given him the diuretic “to help with the weight loss” for his last fight against Troy Rowland on the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto “Fire Power” undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas last November 14.
NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer informed us that a hearing would take place most probably in January next year even as he disclosed that Chavez had voluntarily submitted to a urinalysis prior to his fight and the tests showed “the presence of Furosemide which is a diuretic that has not been approved by the NSAC and its administration or use licensed by a Nevada licensed boxer was prohibited.
Kizer said that the allegations “constitute sufficient cause for disciplinary action against the licensee pursuant to the provisions of NRS Chapter 467 and NAC Chapter 467. The Executive Director prays for relief as follows:
A. That CHAVEZ be fined a monetary sum pursuant to the parameters defined” by the regulations 2.That the Commission take action against CHAVEZ’s license pursuant to the parameters defined at NAC 467.885 and that the result of the Contest be changed to a no decision;
They NSAC also wants Chavez to pay the costs of the proceeding, including investigative costs and attorney’s fees and that he provide the Commission with a negative urine test for diuretics upon filing his next application for an unarmed combatant’s license; and for such other and further relief as the Commission may deem just and proper.”
