MONTIEL TURNS DOWN DOMINGO FIGHT

Domingo.

World rated Michael Domingo’s attempt to replace Z “The Dream” Gorres in a WBO title fight against Mexico’s Fernando Montiel in the “Pinoy Power III” Top Rank fight card at the Las Vegas Hilton on February 13 has been turned down by Montiel.

Top Rank’s respected matchmaker Bruce Trampler informed us early Thursday (Manila Time) that “Montiel did not accept Domingo” obviously scared of losing his title to the skilled Filipino.

Trampler earlier informed us that they were “waiting for a response from Montiel’s camp” and that Domingo “has not yet been accepted by Montiel. They are checking him (Domingo) out.”

Trampler also informed us that they have “no opponent yet” for WBA super flyweight interim champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire although Donaire himself told us the name of Gerson Guerrero had been mentioned in the past as a possible opponent.

Donaire has already begun training for his planned February fight even though he doesn’t know who he’s likely to face.

He told us that he had asked for two Mexican super bantamweights as sparring partners even as he indicated that he right now weighs 130 pounds and plans to move up to bantamweight after hopefully winning the WBA super flyweight belt.

The former IBF/IBO flyweight champion who won the title with a sensational 5th round knockout of Vic Darchinyan in the 2007 “Knockout of the Year” also disclosed there has been talk about the possibility of a rematch with Darchinyan sometime after his next fight.

Gorres who won a rousing ten round decision over Colombia’s Luis Melendez at the Mandalay Bay House of Blues last November 13 but collapsed after the decision was announced and had to undergo brain surgery at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas tragically ending his career just when he was at his peak, is still in hospital and is expected to remain there for sometime.

His wife Dachess flew to Las Vegas to be at his bedside and this is expected to lift the spirits of the fallen fighter who has been recovering well. However, he has been advised by all concerned not to leave hospital until he is perfectly fine and medically cleared to do so.

There are growing concerns over his medical bills since the insurance coverage by promoter Top Rank who staged the fight card in partnership with MP Promotions of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is worth only $50,000.
