Newly-crowned WBO superflyweight champion Marvelous Marvin Sonsona is set to start training in Baguio City on Monday to prepare for his November 21 title defense in Ontario, Canada.
This was revealed on Sunday by co-trainer Nonito Donaire Sr in a wide-ranging interview over "Pinoy Boxing," a leading radio show aired Sundays over RMN-DyHP.
Sonsona, according to Donaire, is set to tangle against a Mexican opponent, although no name has yet been announced by American promoter Sampson Lewkowicz, who promotes the young world champion.
There are three Mexican's in the WBO's superfly rungs: no. 3 Juan Alberto Rosas, no. 5 Jorge Arce, and no. 7 Hugo Cazares. Both Arce and Cazares are former world champs.
Sonsona, in a recent interview with Cebu media, had announced that he would be very interested to fight Jorge Arce, a Mexican legend now on a downward spiral in his career.
"My dream fight would be against Jorge Arce," Sonsona said.
Co-trainer Donaire, meanwhile, will rendezvouz with Team Sonsona on October 18 in Baguio, as he has yet to attend to other fighters in Cebu whom he is training.
Joining Sonsona for this Monday's trip to Baguio are chief trainer Jhun Agrabio and manager Rajan Yraola.
When asked if Sonsona will be training anywhere near superstar Manny Pacquiao's training facility in Baguio, Donaire indicated that may not happen to avoid possible comparisons.
"People might start comparing Sonsona to Manny, which will not be good. Sonsona is a very young kid, while Manny is an icon we all respect. There should be no comparison," said Donaire Sr.
