Palicte, Bangoyan Capture WBC Regional Crowns Over Pinoy Rivals

Vince “Popeye” Palicte and Balweg Bangoyan prevailed over their respective Filipino opponents last night to capture their share of the WBC regional crown in the “Bakbakan Sa Manila” (“Warfare in Manila”) held at the San Andres Sports Complex, Manila.
In the first championship fight of the evening, Vince “Popeye” Palicte who fights out of Elmer Anuran’s Touch Gloves Boxing Gym of Agoncillo, Batangas, battled with Carlo Magale of the the Harabbas Stable (Talipon, Bohol) for the WBC International bantamweight title. The heavily favoured Palicte rocked Magale numerous times during the fight, mostly with hard right straights and uppercuts, but just could not put off his gutsy opponent. Palicte had his biggest chance to score a knockout when at the closing seconds of the 7th round, he landed a huge right uppercut to initiate a flurry that had Magale in serious trouble only for the latter to be saved by the bell. Though he was never in any sort of trouble, the technically gifted Palicte allowed Magale’s gloves to land on him too many times as can be evident from the minor bruises in the former’s face. Palicte could have gone for the knock-out had he been more aggressive but was content on taking some counter-puncher role and just satisfied himself with a unanimous decision win by identical scores of 116-112 in the scorecards of judges Virgilio Garcia, Silvestre Abainza, and Bruce McTavish. Referee Ferdinand Estrella acted as the third man in the ring.
In the second championship fight that served as the final bout of the evening, Balweg Bangoyan fighting out of the CK Gym of Davao recaptured the WBC International super-bantamweight crown by winning over Raymond Sermona (Elorde Boxing Stable) in a most entertaining and gruelling 12 rounds. Using smart ring generalship, Bangoyan avoided many of Sermona’s big bombs keeping the latter at bay with his stiff jabs. Nonetheless, Sermona, likewise, had his moments several times during the fight rocking Bangoyan with huge rights to the head and body of which the latter was able to handle well. Bangoyan then would usually retaliate with a variety of crisp punches that would often land beautifully on their target. The bout was hotly contested and could have gone either way although some rounds which this writer thought Sermona was able to stole may not be the case in the official scorecards of the judges. In the end, Bangoyan emerged as the winner via a majority decision with boxing judges Atty. Epi Almeda and Rey Danseco turning in respective scores of 116-112 and 115-113 in his favour whilst Gene del Bianco had it even at 114-114. The bout was refereed by Bruce McTavish.
In another bout, Juanito Rubillar made his first appearance after his unsuccessful bid for the WBA light flyweight title in July which was marred by a controversial stoppage. The veteran campaigner slugged it out with Jason Geda for three rounds in their flyweight bout until Geda sustained a big gash over his right eye at the end of the third round which was likely caused by an accidental head-butt right before the bell to end the 3rd. Nonetheless, the referee officially ruled the cut to have come from a punch effectively awarding Rubillar a TKO victory.
Rounding off the results of the other bouts:
B.J. Dolorosa (Elorde Boxing Stable) defeated Allen Matugas (Trece Martirez, Cavite) via a unanimous decision in their 8-round flyweight bout (80-70, 80-70, and 80-71);
Adelino “Kid” Balongcas boxed beautifully to score a knockdown each in the 2nd and 3rd rounds leading to a stoppage win over Jaypee Otilla (Elorde) in 1:54 of the 5th round in their bantamweight bout scheduled for 6 rounds;
Dado Cabintoy (Elorde) figured in a split draw with veteran Christian Maas in their 6-round super-flyweight bout (58-56 for Maas, 59—55 for Cabintoy, and 57-57);
Datu Dave Day (Davao City) defeated Vergel Nebran (Elorde) via a split decision in their super-bantamweight bout where one judge scored 57-56 Nebran but was overruled by the other two judges who turned in scores of 57-56 and 58-55, respectively in favour of Day;
Renan Trongco (Elorde) scored a 3rd round TKO over Henry Benito (Davao City) in their junior flyweight bout scheduled for 6 rounds; and
Dandy Delaro (Elorde) figured in a draw with Rodarito Barona (Abra) in their 4-round super-flyweight bout.
The event was promoted by the Elorde International Productions of Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde, Jr. In coordination with Mayor Alfredo Lim of Manila whilst the matchmaking was handled by Ronald Jerez.
