Rapada defeats Doliguez in Mandaluyong Boxing

Eric Rapada of the Tiger City Boxing Stable of Mandaluyong City was putting on an impressive performance for several rounds before winning via a disqualification over his opponent, Roy Doliguez, in their 10-round junior bantamweight bout which was also for the Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) crown. The bout was the main event of last night’s “Bangis ng Kamao IV” (“Fury of the Fists IV”) held at the Mandaluyong City Gymnasium which was presented by Mayor Benhur Abalos in cooperation with Jay San Pedro Boxing Promotions.
Rapada started the bout boxing beautifully using his jabs to keep Doliguez at bay while scoring some nice combinations to the body. Not to be outdone, Doliguez was moving well in the early going and managed to score some crisp counters on the taller and rangier Rapada. Action heated up as the rounds progressed where Rapada was slowly beginning to control the action even pummelling Doliguez with punishing body shots, which, to the latter’s credit, was taking them well. Things began to turn ugly starting in the fourth round when a head-butt, apparently initiated by Doliguez, caused a small cut above Rapada’s right eye. At that point, the bleeding was such that there was a danger that the fight might be stopped early for a possible technical draw. Fortunately, the bleeding was managed well and the ring physician signalled that the fight could continue. With Rapada on surge and Doliguez unable to find an effective way to contain him, the latter started using his head, literally. Following two successive warnings for initiating the head-butt, Referee Abainza finally deducted Doliguez a point in the fifth round. Another dangerous head-butt initiated by Doliguez in the sixth round prompted Referee Abainza to impose a two-point deduction on the erring boxer carried by a warning that he would be disqualified should he repeat the infraction one more time. At this point, Rapada’s face was already in a bloody mess as a result of the numerous head-butting. Failing to heed the warning, Doliguez continued his wayward ways giving the referee no choice but to disqualify him lest Rapada’s face might be in for disfigurement.
In the supporting main event, 26 seconds was all it took for Al Sabaupan to disposed of his opponent Elmer Saligumba in their scheduled 10-round lightweight bout. A cracking short right to the chin sent Saligumba crashing to the canvas for an expected knock-out. Surprisingly, he managed to get back to his feet, albeit, on very unsteady legs and was staggering all over the ring even turning his back on his opponent. Referee Virgilio Garcia provided him some hope by not counting him out immediately but sensing that the boxer was still having some stars vision, the referee had no choice but to waive off the fight awarding the still undefeated Sabaupan a TKO victory.
In another bout, a first round knockdown courtesy of a right uppercut scored by Ruel Lagunero helped him earn a split decision victory over Remy Cuambot in their 8-round minimum-weight fight.
Lagunero was pressing Cuambot for most part of the fight but the latter adjusted well after the knockdown and certainly gave Lagunero some stylistic problems through-out the remainder of the bout scoring some crisp counters of his own.
Rounding off the results of the other fights:
Noli Morales remains undefeated with a split-decision victory over Dino Lelis in their 8-round junior-flyweight bout;
Ricky Cabantigan scored a 2nd round TKO win over Chris Padao in a very interesting bantam-weight slugfest (scheduled for 4 rounds);
Christian Abila scored a knockdown over Socrates Pasaol en route to a split decision victory in their 4-round super-featherweight fight in an exciting war;
Jun Rey Lontiong was a 1st TKO winner over Richard Vasquez in their junior bantamweight bout scheduled for 4 rounds; and
Christian Nokomura scored a 4th round TKO victory over Jun Mark Martirez in their flyweight bout scheduled for 4 rounds.
The event was covered by Elmer Anuran’s Save By the Bell which is being shown on RPN-9 every Sunday at 3 p.m. Matchmaking was handled by Jimmy Narvaez.
