BANGKOK-The World Boxing Organization (WBO, through its beloved president Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel, has appointed today South African Andrew Smale as its WBO Executive Committee 4th Vice-President for the African region.
"Keep up your good work in Africa, together with African Chairman Leon Panoncillo," Valcarcel said in his official appointment letter to Smale with copy furnished to Panoncillo.
Valcarcel was apparently elated that for the first time ever, the WBO has made its presence in Africa through the initiative of Panoncillo, who has tapped Smale for the job of putting WBO's presence in the region.
"We have confidence that your love of boxing, its dignity, its honesty and its democracy, will always be foremost in all your decisions," Valcarcel said in closing.
Panoncillo, in an interview with Philboxing.com, revealed today that along with Smale, he will nurture the WBO African region the way he has successfully steered the WBO Asia Pacific, Oriental and Youth arms of the sanctioning body.
"I am very confident that with the right positive frame of mind, we will attain a modest success in the near future," stated Panoncillo, who also thanks Valcarcel and the WBO for the trust bestowed.
Smale recently flew to the Philippines to personally learn the ropes of supervising boxing events under the watchful eyes of Panoncillo in a fight card held in Cebu City.
