Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. is ready to face undefeated Luciano Cuello of Argentina in the main event of ?Tijuana Thunder? in the big championship today in the Plaza de Toros Monumental in Tijuana, Mexico. He has a record of 39 wins, no losses and 1 draw, with 29 wins by knockout.
Cuello holds a record of 23-0, 7 wins by knockout. The fight will be for the Latino junior middleweight crown in ?Latin Fury 8″ a championship card promoted by Top Rank Promotions in association with the City of Tijuana and its Honorable Mayor Jorge Ramos.
The 23-year-old Chavez, Jr., is the son of legendary boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez. He was born when his father was the WBC world junior lightweight champion. His face is popular to boxing fans when his father would bring him and his brother atop the ring as small children, before each of Chavez Sr.'s fights.
Chavez Jr. lived in anonymity until he announced that he would follow the footsteps of his father and become a boxer. At 6 feet, he is taller than his father who is 5?6.? He started as a junior lightweight and he now fights as a junior middleweight.
His amateur career was relatively short and he turned professional at the age 17. He was featured in the boxing promotions of his father and the undercards of many key pay-per-view bouts. It is exceptional for a neophyte fighter, but the main reason is he is bringing with him his father's prominence.
Tijuana is the largest city of the Mexican state of Baja California, situated on the U.S.-Mexico border adjacent to its sister city of San Diego, California. The Tijuana metropolitan area is the sixth-largest in Mexico and the San Diego-Tijuana Metropolitan Area is the 14th largest metropolitan area in North America.
Tijuana is one of the fastest-growing cities in Mexico. It is the home of boxing legend Erik Morales and Antonio Margarito, former IBF and WBO welterweight champion. The triple-treat boxing card courtesy of Bob Arum will boast the sagging popularity of boxing promotions in Mexico.
?I?m really looking forward to this fight and to be the headliner in a card in Tijuana, a city I consider my second home. I?m training very hard because in Tijuana I want to show everyone that I?m ready to fight for a world championship and I just can?t wait to get into the ring to prove to everyone how ready I am to take the next step,? said Chavez Jr.
?Tijuana Thunder? will include two world championship bouts as WBC super featherweight champion Humberto ?Zorrita? Soto will defend his title for the first time against Antonio Davis of Atlanta and Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel will take on Diego Silva of Argentina for the WBO interim bantamweight crown.
Chavez Jr trained in Culiacan, Mexico in the ?Mr. KO? gym that is owned by his father under the tutelage of his uncles Rodolfo Chavez and Miguel Molleda. He trained meticulously for nearly seven weeks for this very essential fight of his budding career.
