Current RP super-featherweight champion Aaron Melgarejo will be fighting this March 15 in Okinawa, Japan when he takes on local boy Masato Maedo.

Melgarejo, who fights out of the Olivetti Boxing Stable of Binan, Laguna and previously served as a sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao when the latter was preparing for his fights with Jorge Solis and Marco Antonio Barrera (2nd fight), had his last fight in October when he successfully defended his Philippine title via a 6th round TKO over Judefil Aclo. He will be fighting a hard-puching opponent in Maedo who sports a win-loss-draw record of 14-2-2 with 6 KOs.

In conversation with this writer, Melgarejo's trainer, Dino Olivetti, a former Philippine titleholder himself, said that Melgarejo is aware of the significance of this fight and vowed to display an impressive performance against Maedo. Such commitment can be seen when he is sparring with the likes of Dennis Laurente, Dan Nazareno, and Vinvin Rufino in preparation for his upcoming fight. Surely, an impressive win would open windows of opportunity to fight the bigger names in his division.
