Tinampay Retains RP Welter Crown, Ferreras is New Superfly Champ

Arniel Tinampay successfully retained his RP welterweight crown when he defeated young challenger Dan Nazareno via a unanimous decision (117-110, 118-110, and 114-113) in the main event of last night's Big Bang Sa Binangonan Boxing at the Ynares Plaza, Binangonan, Rizal. The event was presented by ?In This Corner? in cooperation with Gov. Junjun Ynares and Mayor Boyet Ynares, who for many years have been ardent supporters of boxing.

Tinampay, a fighter from the Montemayor Boxing Stable and once served as a sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao, was the busier fighter for most part of the bout and consistently scored quick combinations to the head and to the body. Though Nazareno was never in serious trouble, Tinampay's punches continually compiled points in the judges' scorecards. Nazareno appeared to make the fight interesting when he staggered Tinampay in the 4th round but may have been caused by accidental headbutt as Tinampay was cut above the eye after the skirmishes and for which Nazareno was deducted a point. Nazareno had another good round in the 5th scoring hard crosses to the face of Tinampay who took them well after which it was all Tinampay the rest of the way. Nazareno could have put up a better fight had he been busier and more aggressive than he actually was in this bout. To this writer, his taking the role of a counterpuncher in this fight in contrast to his usual style of dicating the action was a strategic error that effectively cost him the fight.

In the co-main event of the evening, Daniel Ferreras of the Wow Magic Sing Boxing Stable of Binan, Laguna became the new Philippine super-flyweight champion by scoring an upset majority decision victory over tough and rugged Danilo Pena. Pena appeared to be in control in the initial rounds when Ferreras fought him toe to toe and the latter was a recipient of huge right hooks to the face on many occassions. Ferreras wisely improved his lateral movement as the fight progressed and allowed him to score clean counters on the charging and outbalanced Pena. The fight was difficult to score but in the end, it was the points deducted from Pena in the 8th and 11th round for cuts sustained by Ferreras from accidental headbutts that proved to be the difference. Scores were 113-113, 114-112, and 114-112.

In the supporting events, Michael Landero figured in a split draw with Donie Mabao in their junior flyweight bout (97-93 for Landero, 96-94 for Mabao, and 95-95), Ardine Diale winning a luckluster fight against Arman Casa in their flyweight fight (96-94 in all judges' scorecards), and Edgar Gabejan scoring a close unanimous decision victory over Ronald Pontillas in their featherweight fight (76-75, 76-75, and 77-74).

Rounding off the results of the other fights:

Remy Cuambot defeated Jessie Tuyor via a hairline UD in their 6-round junior-flyweight bout where a point deducted against Tuyor for a cut sustained by Cuambot accounting for the difference (57-56 in all judges' scorecards);

Allan Tanada, a promising young fighter from the Wildcard Boxing Gym scoring a second round TKO over Christian Nokomura in their bantam-weight bout;

Martin Brencis winning via a majority decision over Claver Bentolero in their junior fly-weight bout (38-38, 39-37, and 40-36) ; and

Marvin Avila winning by unanimous decision over Butch Flores in their minimum-weight bout (39-36, 39-36, and 38-37) in a fight adjudged as the best of the preliminaries.
