AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu acknowledged the great organisational skills and expertise of the Boxing Federation of Russia (BFR) and presented BFR President General Evgeny Murov with an award on the final day of the AIBA World Cup Moscow 2008.
AIBA's end-of-year event finished on Sunday with Cuba collecting six gold medals, Russia three and Armenia and the Philippines one apiece each carrying a prize package of $10,000 apiece.
The Philippines Olympic veteran Harry Tanamor won the gold medal in the light flyweight division with an impressive 15:7 victory over Cuba's Beijing Olympics bronze medalist Yampier Hernandez.
"This tournament was extraordinarily successfull and extremely well run," AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu told the audience in the Megasport Palace. "My deepest thanks goes to BFR President General Murov and his team who have done an excellent job. I have personally heard how happy the boxers are and from AIBA's point of view the tournament has been a great success."
With 88 of the world's top boxers competing over 11 weight categories, four days of brilliant boxing culminated in the finals on Sunday. In addition to the winner's prize, runner's up took home $5,000 and bronze medallists $2,500.
