Ranee ?KO Kid? Ganoy (25-10-2, 21 KO?s) has been knocked out in the fourth round of an IBF eliminator for the No. 2 spot in rankings by American Fernando ?La Fiera? Angulo (21-4, 13 KO?s) who was coming off a 3rd round KO of Daniel Souza Santos of Brazil last August 30.
Ganoy, who won his last fight against Thailand?s Sapapetch Sor Sakaorat by a second round KO on July 19 this year in Cebu simply couldn?t stand up to the punching power of Angulo and was counted out by referee David Fields of the United States. Fighting at a high altitude took its toll while the lack of experienced, quality trainers also contributed to Ganoy?s inability to fight at the top level.
In his last fight in Cebu which Ganoy won he looked amateurish against an unheralded Thai who was merely overwhelmed by the rugged Filipino who showed hardly any technique to go with his undoubted punching power.
Thailand?s tough Devid Lookmahanak who was off a controversial split decision loss to Mexican warrior Jorge Arce last May 18 in a WBC title eliminator who arrived at the last minute because he couldn?t get a flight out of Bangkokafter anti-government demonstrators seized the facility was no match for undefeated South Africa Evans Mabamba.
Mabamba stopped Lookmahanak in the 7th round and move closer to getting a crack at the WBC super flyweight title held by Australia ?s Vic Darchinyan.
The fight card was staged by WBC ?International Promoter of the Year? Branco Milenkovic who is fast earning the respect of the international boxing community for his untiring efforts to bring big fights to South Africa . The venue was the Carousel near Pretoria .
Super Sport reported that Mbamba floored Lookmanahak with a ?combination of solid punches that left the Thai fighter on the floor for several minutes.? Referee Guadalupe Garcia of Mexico didn?t finish counting and instead removed the Thai fighter?s mouth-guard and called for the ring doctor when Lookmahanak didn?t get up off the canvas. The end came at 2:17 of the seventh round after Mbamba had dominated the first couple of rounds before the Thai came back in the fourth and fifth rounds with some solid body shots.
It was clear that Lookmanahak who arrived in South Africa only two days before the fight also had to contend with the effects of the high altitude. With the win Mbamba improved his unbeaten record to 16-0 with 8 knockouts while Lookmahanak who went down rather unexpectedly according to Super Sport needed oxygen. He dropped to 18-3 with 9 knockouts.
