Los Angeles, CA (Nov. 22, 2008) ? While in the midst of preparation for a showdown versus 10-time world champion "The Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya, boxing's number one pound-for-pound fighter and five-division world champion, Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao learned news from the WBC regarding settlement of outstanding sanction fees by Kelly Pavlik, Humberto Soto and himself.

Pavlik overwhelmed Taylor on September 29, 2007 to become the WBC Middleweight Champion. On October 11, 2008, Soto beat Gamaliel Diaz to win the vacant WBC Superfeatherweight title via 11 Rd TKO. On June 28, 2008, Pacquiao defeated David D?az via 9th Rd TKO to become the current WBC lightweight champion. With that spectacular win, Pacquiao becomes the first Filipino boxer to hold a world title at the lightweight division. A few Filipino boxers have attempted including Flash Elorde, Rolando Navarette, to name a few, but all have failed.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao is set to face PPV king Oscar De La Hoya on December 6, 2008 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Presented by Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions, the fight will be a 12-round, non-title bout competing at the 147-pound welterweight limit. The bout will be telecast by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning 9 PM ET/ 6 PM PT (Sunday morning, Dec. 7, in the Philippines).

While the amounts were not disclosed, one can assume that they were indeed satisfactory for both WBC and the champions' respective management/ teams. According to a WBC fight contract, the designation of a Boxer as the Champion are trademarks, titles and accolades which are the property of, and belong exclusively to, the WBC, and are not rights, vested or otherwise, held, owned or enjoyed by Boxer; and, further, that the WBC has and reserves the right, in its discretion, to suspend or withdraw recognition from any champion in the aforesaid weight division, or not to certify any fight as being for the WBC recognized World Championship. It is worth mentioning that Pacquiao would sometimes say to his former trainer Ben Delgado? "with great power comes great responsibilities," and we could commend these WBC champions with their management/ teams for fulfilling their respective obligations with the prestigious sanctioning body.
In a bulk email received by this writer from the WBC yesterday, President Jose Sulaiman stated the following:

The WBC is happy to inform that the cases reviewed during the WBC Annual Convention in Chengdu, People's Republic of China, regarding the three WBC champions who had outstanding sanction fees, have all come to a satisfactory agreement.

Kelly Pavlik, Humberto Soto, Manny Pacquiao, and their managers have all been in close communications with WBC President Jose Sulaiman, and all of the matters have been agreed and resolved.

We wish the best of luck to our champions who will have very important activity in the near future, and the WBC is very proud of all of them.
