Former amateur standout Vincent Palicte and Mating Kilakil, both mainstays of the Touch Gloves Boxing Gym of Agoncillo, Batangas, registered impressive victories against their respective opponents in yesterday's boxing event held in Barangay Subic, Agoncillo, Batangas beside the calm waters of the cove in a vivacious environment. The event which started in the mid-afternoon and finished in the early evening, was promoted by Elmer Anuran's Save by the Bell Boxing Promotion.
Fighting in the supporting main event, Palicte boxed beautifully to defeat veteran Celso Danggod via a unanimous decision in their fight held at the bantam-weight level. The fight started quietly but began to heat up in the third round when Palicte started putting pressure on Danggod. In the 4th round, Palicte appeared to mean business when he launched an early offensive but was soon content of just piling up the points for the remainder of the round. The 5th was a demonstration of boxing skillls for Palicte and would have delighted any boxing purist beautifully evading Danggod's punches with good lateral movements and parrying the latter's shots with his gloves, at one point scoring a triple jab on the face of Danggod. In the 8th round, Palicte scored three successive left hooks to the body and followed up with three more although Danggod appeared to take them well. Palicte closed the rounds with a further display of masterful defense and ring general ship. Overall, it was a boxing lesson not only to his opponent but to any aspiring boxer in attendance. The scores were 100-91 (twice), and 100-90 for Palicte.
In the main event fought at the minimun-weight level, Mating Kilakil's right straight to the midsection was working all evening en route to scoring a 5th round TKO over Julius Agcopra. A barrage of punches dropped Agcopra,, whose right eye was virtually closed from Kilakil's punches, upon which Referee Eddie Nobleza promptly stopped the bout. The time was 2:09 of the 5th round.
In another bout held at the superbantam-weight level and scheduled for six rounds, Lloyd Francisco registered his fourth career victory with a 3rd round TKO win over Arjet Caballes. Lloyd, who is the brother of WBO Asia-Pacific superflyweight champion Drian Francisco, was a little bit flat-footed but seemed to be quick on defense. After repeatedly connecting with strong jabs and hooks, Francisco nailed Caballes with a big left straight in the 3rd round sending the latter staggering through the ropes. From that point on, Caballes was on a survival mode and after being hit further by successive shots from Francisco, Referee Virgilio Garcia mercifully stopped the fight. The time was 1:51 of the 3rd round.
Rounding off the results of the other fights:
Rodynie Rafol defeated Adelino ?Kid? Balongcas via a UD in their bantam-weight bout (39-38, 39-37, and 39-37);
Debuting boxers Jonathan Arocha and Jecker Buhawe figured in a majority draw in a very entertaining junior fly-weight bout (40-36 Arocha, and 38-38 (twice)); and
John Dacayanan winning over Ramil Dejano by a second round TKO (2:10).
