CEBU CITY--Reigning WBO Intercontinental superbantam champ Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista has informed that he would be ready to face tormentor Daniel Ponce de Leon in a rematch if the right opportunity presents itself.
In an interview over radio program "Pinoy Boxing" aired yesterday over RMN-DYHP hosted by this writer and international boxing judge Edward Ligas, Bautista indicated that a rematch with Ponce de Leon would be an interesting fight, "if the terms and conditions are right."
Bautista was reacting to fans' queries sent in via text line if he would be interested in a rematch with his old foe, who easily stopped him in the first round of their World Cup duel last year. More than a hundred texters took part in yesterday's edition of "Pinoy Boxing" which is presented by sportsman Luigi Quisumbing's Auto Solutions, distributor of Sunriser motorcycles.
Earlier, during his recent trip to Cebu, Golden Boy Promotions vice-president Eric Gomez had told this writer that Ponce de Leon had asked that he be pitted against Bautista in a rematch "in the Philippines" which the GBP exec described as a match-up that is going to be huge for the Filipino fans.
Bautista guested the top-rating radio show yesterday along with WBO minimumweight champion Donnie Nietes, WBO Youth lightweight champion Jason Pagara and their trainers Edito and Edmund Villamor.
Bautista will defend his title on August 30 in a big card here opposite Mexican Eden Marquez at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
The Bacolod City-raised Nietes will also defend his world title against Nicaraguan Eddy Castro in the co-feature of the card dubbed "Night of Champions" presented by ALA Promotions and giant network ABS-CBN.
Pagara will see action in an 8-round non-title showdown with Thailand's Kongdej Sithtrajtrakan.
Other bouts lined up for the show pit Jomanz Omanz versus Roger Galicia; Weng Haya against Johnny Lear; Rey Las Pinas versus Gideon Amba; Jerson Mancio versus Mario Suson; and JV "Fightdoc" Tuazon versus Albert Villacampa.
Meanwhile, a special press conference for the August 30 event will be held on Tuesday at the upscale Lai Garden at the North Wing of SM City Cebu.
A public workout for Bautista and Nietes takes place on Saturday, August 16th. Team Castro and Team Marquez are slated to plane in on Monday, August 25th.
A final press conference takes place on August 28th at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, while the official weigh-in is set on August 29th at the SM Cebu atrium.
