DE LA HOYA VS PACQUIAO HAS ONE BIG HURDLE, SAYS GOMEZ

CEBU CITY--The planned December 6 fight between the world's pay-per-view king Oscar De la Hoya and pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao may not be without a major hurdle, although the fight is doable and may actually take place.

This was revealed yesterday by Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez, who in an exclusive interview, said that network differences might be a major issue to resolve before anything can be worked out.

Gomez stated that leading network ABS-CBN owns the rights to telecast all of De la Hoya's fights for 2008, while at the same time, Pacquiao's television rights belongs to Solar Sports, which in turn uses ABS rival GMA-7 to air Pacquiao's fights on free television.

"This is really something that will have to be worked out, before a fight of this magnitude can happen. However, with this kind of fight, I'm sure a solution can be found," stated Gomez, who arrived in Cebu yesterday with WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo to be at special ringside for this Saturday's WBA superflyweight interim championship between AJ Banal and Rafael Concepcion.

Gomez further stated that if ever the fight pushes through, Pacquiao would pose a major problem for De la Hoya considering the Filipino's fighting style and the power in his hands.

De la Hoya, a six-division world champion, is looking for one last fight to cement his legendary status before he hangs up his gloves, and the four-division world champ Pacquiao is one of the leading candidates considered to battle the GBP head.

International matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz, meanwhile, believes that should the fight take place, Oscar has everything to lose, while the Filipino icon has "nothing to lose and everything to gain."
