MEXICO CITY, Mexico ? World Boxing Council (WBC) president Don Jose Sulaiman Chagnon considers WBC lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao as ?one of my heroes.?
?Manny Pacquiao made me very proud because he became a hero of the Philippines from the President (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) down to the lower citizen. And that is what we need in the world. Manny Pacquiao is a very clean, very devoted and very understanding of his responsibilities,? said the 76-year-old Sulaiman in an exclusive interview at the Polanca Seafood Restaurant here on July 4.
Sulaiman claimed that ?the WBC has been supporting Pacquiao wholeheartedly? and that it will continue to support him if he will try to annex his fifth world crown in the higher division.
?Regardless of his division, Manny Pacquiao is the best. I don?t want to say pound-for-pound because that is very American,? he added. ?Pacquiao is fast and tough.?
The WBC chief also considers the 29-year-old Filipino ring heartthrob as his personal hero.
?Manny Pacquiao is one of my heroes. I ask him not to let his mind get lost. His feet should always be on the ground; to be humble with the humble. He can be pretensious with the pretensious or always be humble with the humble because they beat the heart of the nation,? Sulaiman stressed.
As to Pacquiao?s ?bigger? responsibilities, Sulaiman said: ?Today he has one of the bigger responsibilities. From now on, he has to devote totally in boxing. He should be careful about his peace of mind and his good physical condition. Time will come when he can no longer have anything to be watched. So if he really is disciplined in sport of boxing, if he loves his country more than anything else, he will be a hero to live even after God calls him to be with Him.?
