Isis Sio.

Nineteen-year-old American boxer Isis Sio is in a medically induced coma after being knocked out by her opponent Jocelyn Camarillo in a four-round bout at the National Orange Show Event Center in San Bernardino, California, on Saturday night, March 21.

This tragedy strikes women's boxing again, just days after IBF featherweight champion Nina Meinke defeated Dominican Dyana Vargas in Hamburg in a 12-round fight with three-minute rounds and one-minute breaks.

Sio was trying to stay upright on the ropes after a series of combinations to the head and body from Jocelyn Camarillo in the first round of their women's light flyweight bout.

Sio couldn't hold on and collapsed unresponsive, prompting the referee to immediately stop the fight. She was then rushed to a nearby hospital.

According to a statement released by the event promoter, ProBox TV, Sio is in the intensive care unit at Loma Linda University Health Medical Center, where they are awaiting her full recovery. “Our thoughts are with her and her family during this difficult time,” the statement read.

Sio, originally from North Dakota, made her professional boxing debut in September 2015.

The boxing world hopes for Sio's speedy recovery, while fans insist on the continued validity and support of medical protocols in both men's and women's fights.

Below is a statement from the family and team of Isis Sio:

Isis is a passionate, disciplined, and well-prepared athlete who carefully evaluates each opportunity placed before her.

Her decision to compete on Saturday, March 21, against Jocelyn Camarillo was not made lightly, but rather thoughtfully reviewed and analyzed prior to acceptance.

In reference to her previous bout on January 30 against Perla Bazaldua, the result was not due to a head-strike knockout.

Instead, it was caused by a liver shot.

As is well understood in boxing, a direct blow to the liver can trigger an involuntary physiological response (vasovagal syncope). Because the liver is highly vascularized and rich in nerve supply, such an impact can stimulate the vagus nerve — leading to a sudden drop in blood pressure and heartrate.

This may result in temporary paralysis, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.

Please note, she was on a 45-day suspension and cleared before she accepted the fight with Jocelyn Camarillo.

At this time, Isis remains in ICU, but she is off the ventilator and we are hopeful for her progression.

We are awaiting further updates from her medical team.

She is currently under the care of three specialized medical divisions who are closely monitoring her condition.

We sincerely appreciate the continued support, thoughts, and prayers during this time.

Team Isis
