CHINO Sy Tancontian of Sambo is the 2025 Southern Sports Hero of the Year by the Southern Sports Digest and Davao Sportswriters Association.

The 23-year-old Tancontian earned the Sports Hero award for his gold medal in the 51st All Japan Sambo Championships & Japan International Competition, held last February at Sumida-ku Sogo Gymnasium in Tokyo.

Tancontian, a judo varsity scholar from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) dominated the men’s +98kg division, sweeping his matches against Dan Hiramo of Tokai University, Taichin Sasaki of Team Akibahara, and Taishin Ide Shokokuji of Miyazaki Grappling Club.
“He has made such a huge impact for Philippine Combat Sports with his achievements in the World Sambo and in Judo,” said Leo Paul Palo of Southern Sports Digest.

Tancontian earlier also won the gold at the SJJIF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Nagoya, Japan, and topped the Grand Prix de Sambo de Paris last year.

He is also a consistent UAAP judo gold medalist.

“Chino still has a long way to go and he is still a force to reckon with just like his sister Sydney,” said Palo.

The 2025 Sports Heroes Night is on September 28, Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom of The Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City.
