Gemino (L) and Mancito duke it out in Candelaria Monday night.

In a clash between two notable Pinoy veteran boxing journeymen, Jhon Gemino eked out a 10 round split decision over Eduardo Mancito in the main event of the Mano Mano sa Candelaria 3 boxing promotion of Mr Hermie Arcillas in Candelaria, Quezon Monday night.

In the process, Gemino won the Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) featherweight championship before an animated crowd at a jampacked LDB arena in the so called Desiccated Coconut Capital of the Philippines.

The bout was however marred by a minor controversy when Mancito floored Gemino in the opening round by what the referee ruled as a low blow. The Mancito corner claimed that Gemino was knocked down by a legal punch, alleging it was an uppercut to the chin.

However, Gemino thereafter adopted a more defensive stance utilizing a herky jerky counterpunching style that frustrated Mancito but did not please some spectators who expected the two to mix it up from the first round on.

Two of the judges had Gemino up in the end with one casting a dissenting card in favor of his opponent.

Originally super bantamweights, Gemino (now 25-18-1) and Mancito (now 21-17-2) have fought extensively abroad where they met world champions and world rated fighters in the featherweight and super featherweight divisions thus suffering many of their career defeats. Gemino had faced and lost on points to Emanuel Navarette and upset by first round knockout American then undefeated prospect Toka Khan Clary while Mancito was contracted to a three fight deal in Mexico where he fought and lost by decision to Rey Vargas and two other world rated Mexicans. Navarette is currently WBO super featherweight champion while Vargas holds the WBC featherweight crown.

The victory gives new lease of life to Gemino who has previously reigned as GAB Philippine super bantamweight titlist. On the other hand, with his gritty performance, Mancito showed he has more to offer as a prizefighter.

In other fights-

Joshua Manago fought Kenneth Albino in an 8 round bout for the GAB Youth bantamweight title with Albino winning by 8th round TKO.

In a six rounder, Andrew Palas battled Marsolo Pandian in a featherweight bout with Pandian winning by 5th round TKO.

In a pair of 4 rounders, Ruel Hababag won by unanimous decision over Elmer Estrada and Mark Anthony Agbay stopping Jozel Joves.

Hermie Arcillas who owns and operates the Arcillas Boxing Gym in Tondo, Manila hopes to promote more fights in the provinces.
