
Macala wins Ongkingco chessfest

NATIONAL Master Macacuna “Aki” Macala needed only a draw in the last round to win the Sheena Ongkingco Chess tournament last October 20 at the Shanshyr Poolside Resto in Matina, Davao City.
Macacuna beat Lucky Leo Aton, Marlowe Cagulada, Carl Jasphyr Llord Fiel and Kobi Bryant Segura, 4-0 in the first four rounds of the 6-round tournament.
Macacuna then defeated NM Lyndon Sombilon in the 5th round before setting a draw with AGM Anthony Mosqueda for a total of 5.5 points.
NM James Infiesto bested Kobi Bryant Segura and Paolo Prado in a tie-break to place second with 5.0 points.
Segura and Prado settled for third and fourth, respectively.
The 4th to 15th with identical 4.0 points each: NM Lyndon Sombilon, AGM Anthony Mosqueda, Renaldo Gempero Jr., Gino Asuncion, Ruel Nuttal, Jonthan Dapar Jr., Lito Laput, Ronald Ledesma, Reynaldo Quinonez, Jaeu Han and Sherwin Orbeta.
The tournament director was Marlowe Cagulada while chief arbiter and deputy chief arbiter were NA Joseph Palero and NA Cecilio Acas, respectively.
