Former unified world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin was appointed by the World Boxing as its chair as the new multinational boxing body aims to be recognized by the International Olympic Committee as its boxing’s authorized international federation.

World Boxing was launched in April 2023 headed by officials from member organizations of the Common Cause Alliance. A number of boxing national federations formed the Common Cause Alliance (CCA) in an attempt to preserve boxing in the Summer Olympics list of events from the 2024 Paris and beyond.

The International Boxing Association (IBA) was relieved of its recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2023. So far boxing is not yet included in Los Angeles 2028 Games list of events as the IOC encourages the national associations to accept the creation of a new global body.

The Common Cause Alliance was formed in early 2022 by 18 national federations. It called for the International Boxing Association to disclose its financial dealings with Russian energy giant Gazprom, determining the detrimental effects of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, and for IBA to impose sanctions against the Russian Boxing Federation.

In May 2022, Dutch boxing head Boris van der Vorst, who led the alliance was declared ineligible to challenge incumbent IBA president and Russian executive Umar Kremlev in an election. In September 2022, a bizarre IBA congress declared opposition to holding any new election, and accepting Kremlev to hold onto the presidency. By December 2022, the membership of the Common Cause Alliance had increased to 25 federations.

Golovkin, a 2004 Olympic silver medallist while representing Kazakhstan, has not fought since losing his third fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2022. Though there was no official retirement from one of the sport’s biggest stars, his appointment this year as the president of Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee suggested that the 42-year-old’s ring days were over.

Golovkin whose nickname "GGG" or "Triple G" has held multiple middleweight world championships, and is a two-time former unified champion. He held the World Boxing Association (WBA) (Super version), World Boxing Council (WBC) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) titles at different times between 2014 and 2023. He challenged once for the undisputed super middleweight championship in 2022 against Canelo. He is also a former International Boxing Organization (IBO) middleweight champion, and held the title twice between 2011 and 2023.
