SPORTS FACTS AND FIGURES 35: NESTHY PETECIO, HERGIE BACYADAN, AIRA VILLEGAS AND ROGEN LADON ENTER FINALS IN THE 2024 BOXAM ELITE TOURNAMENT

Four Filipino fighters led by Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Nesthy Petecio dominated their respective opponents to enter the finals of the 2024 Boxam Elite Tournament in La Nucia, Spain on Friday, February 2.

The 31-year-old Petecio showed her ferocious fighting figure that earned her a silver in Tokyo Games and compelled Switzerland's Ana Marija Milisic to abandon the bout in the second round in the women’s 57kg division.

Petecio is now assured of a silver medal and gained a championship match with Chinese Taipei’s Huang Hsiao-Wen, who defeated Spanish hometown favorite Jenifer Fernandez Romero via unanimous decision.

Hergie Bacyadan also moved to the gold medal fight in the women’s 75kg after winning a 4-1 split decision over Mexican Citalli Ortiz. Bacyadan, who previously competed in wushu and vovinam, arranged a finals match with Kazakhstan’s Yerzhan Gulsaya.

Aira Villegas thumped England's Kelsey Oakley,, 4-1, in the women’s 50kg to arrange a gold-medal bout against Kazakhstan’s Kyzaibay Nazym, who battered Spaniard Laura Fuertez Fernandez via unanimous decision.

Also showing his might was Olympian Rogen Ladon, who escaped with a close 3-2 split decision over Mexican Ari Bonilla in the men’s 51kg. class.

Ladon, a world championship bronze medalist an Olympian in the 2016 Rio Games, will tangle with Istvan Szaka in the finals after the Hungarian scored a 4-1 split decision victory over hometown fighter Spanish Martin Molina Salvador.

The tournament is part of the country’s boxing preparations for the Paris Olympic qualification. The 2024 World Qualification Tournaments are scheduled for February 29 – March 12 in Busto Arsizio, Italy and May 23 – June 3 in Bangkok, Thailand.
