Regie “Filipino Phenom” Suganob of Dauis, Bohol, won handily over Venezuelan veteran Ronald Chaco in the main event of “Kumong Bol-anon XII” on Saturday, November 4. The 26-year-old former world title contender won convincingly during their international regional title fight at the Bohol Wisdom School Gym in Tagbilaran City.

Suganob earned the nod of the judges and scored a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision win in the main event handed by PMI Bohol Boxing Promotions.

With his victory, Suganob seized the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Global light flyweight title that would catapult him back to the world rankings.

Suganob became the second Filipino boxer to capture the WBO Global belt. He and former three-division world champion John Riel Casimero, the reigning WBO Global super bantamweight champion, are the holders of the new WBO regional title belt.

Judges Edward Ligas and Martino Redona both scored the bout 119-108, while Neil Papas had it 120-107 all in favor of Suganob, who improved his record to 14 wins with four knockouts and one loss.

Suganob has recovered after losing a 12-round unanimous decision in his first world title fight against IBF world light flyweight champion Sivenathi Nontshinga of South Africa last July 2.

The 32-year-old Chacon suffered his third loss with 30 wins, 22 knockouts, and one draw.

“I have to admit that Chacon has power. I got hit numerous times and felt his punching power. That’s why I wasn’t complacent throughout the fight,” Suganob was quoted by Cebu Daily News Digital.

In the fourth round, Suganob floored Chacon with a stinging jab-straight combination. In the seventh round, Chacon went down on his knees seconds after suffering from body punches. But international referee Danrex Tapdasan did not count it as a knockdown.

Suganob said he needs to improve a lot, but he is still very happy to win the WBO regional title. He considers this as a very important fight because this is his gateway to be ranked in the world again and to fight the best and the world champions in his division if given the opportunity again.

Suganob’s manager and promoter, Floriezyl Echavez Podot of PMI Bohol Boxing Promotions, is eyeing a first title defense for February. However, they have to assess the deep cut suffered by Suganob on his left eyelid caused by an accidental headbutt during the bout, otherwise they have to reschedule it to a later date.
