SEVERAL athletes from Davao City were also cited by the Games and Amusements Board in the recently held 2023 Philippine Professional Sports Summit Awards Night held last September 30 at the PICC in Pasay City.

They are former Philippine international footballer and now referee Merlo Albano, Barangay Ginebra Gin King’s guard Earl Scottie Thompson of Philippine Basketball Association, cue artist Lee Van Corteza, golfers Antonio Lascuna and Juvic Pagunsan, and boxers Jerwin "Pretty Boy" Ancajas and Charly "King’s Warrior" Suarez.

Albano is the one of seven winners of the Trailblazer Awards given to individual professional sports personalities with a groundbreaking historical participation as the first women identifying professional in a male dominated sport.

Albano became an international referee for FIFA in 2027 and as of 2018 is an assistant referee officiating in women’s football matches. Albano has been officiating since 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

Thompson, on the other hand, was the MVP Season 2021-2022 in the PBA while Corteza was Japan's Raxx Classic and Champion 10 Ball Open 2023 champion.

Lascuna is a 23-time winner in Philippine Golf Tournaments, twice in PGT Asia, champion in Taiwan and ASEAN PCA while Pagunsan is a nine-times Philippine Golf Tournament winner, twice in PGT Asia and twice in Asia Development.

The 31-year-old Ancajas has been the IBF World super flyweight champion in 2017 to 2022 and defended the title for eight times.

Suarez, on the other hand, has been undefeated with 16 wins with nine knockouts.

He was the Boxer of the Month for March 2023 for beating Paul Fleming in Sydney to win the IBO Inter-Continental, WBC Asian and IBF Inter-Continental, which was also a world title eliminator.

GAB has cited during the Awards Night three boxing judges from Davao City - Alberto Dulalas, Mario Pedro De Ramos and Lolito delos Reyes and boxing ring physician Dr. Edgardo Tan for their long years of dedicated service in professional boxing.
