?MANNY PACQUIAO TEAM ILOILO? WINDFALL: Amateur boxing group receives P50-T for development program

ILOILO CITY ? Thanks to the cable TV show of a former city councilor here entitled ?Central Point.? The Iloilo Amateur Boxing Development Club, Inc. (IABDCI) received P50,000 from ?Manny Pacquiao Team Iloilo? head Daniel P. Sumagaysay after watching the show ?live? Sunday morning hosted by lawyer Joshua Alim at the Central Philippine University (CPU) Media Center here.

Sumagaysay, a businessman from Pototan, Iloilo, handed the P50,000 check to IABDCI secretary general Jun Intrepido in a simple ceremony at the PNB building here last Sunday.

?Central Point? tackled the topic ?Sports and the politicized society? where the dismal state of Philippine sports was uncovered with Alim, a former city councilor, chiding past and incumbent government officials and sports leaders for their failure to uplift sports in the country.

Alim lamented that despite the much ballyhooed pronouncements of government and sports leaders to win the country?s first gold medal in World Olympics before year 2000, ?it appears that we might end up with another zero medal in the Beijing Olympics.?

This was after it was learned that only Harry Ta?amor of Zamboanga City has been qualified to represent the Philippines in boxing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

?We used to send seven to nine boxers in the Olympics. How come despite the help of private sector and the millions of public funds used to finance the training and foreign exposure of our amateur boxers, we managed to send only one qualifier in this year?s Olympics?? mourned Alim.

Alim blamed politics as the main culprit. He pointed out that ?so many future world class athletes are left behind in the countryside and their talents are wasted because of the failure of the government to provide for their needs like training expenses and continuous sports programs.?

Sumagaysay, owner of the famous Danny?s Restaurant and Catering Services in Pototan, Iloilo, said the money was intended for the club?s ?development program? even as he exhorted other private individuals to also ?do a patriotic act? of helping the government in promoting sports program in the countryside.

?If our government and the private sector will gather their resources together, I believe the Olympic gold medal can be won even if Olympics is held every year,? said the 52-year-old Sumagaysay.

Intrepido thanked Sumagaysay for his benevolence and for his concern to the club which had helped prepare the 1997 Visayas Inter-City Novice Amateur Boxing Championship in Iloilo City.
