UM Davao tops seniors in Athletics Festival

THE University of Mindanao Davao topped the men's and women’s divisions in the 86th Araw ng Dabaw Athletics Festival 2023 last March 18 and 19 at the UM oval in Ma-a, Davao City.

UM garnered nine golds in the women’s category and got five in the men’s category for a total of 14 gold medals.

UM’s Bernadette Mendiola leaped 5.16 meters to win the women’s long jump. Jane Mecailla of Bukidnon Sprinters (5.07m) was second followed in third by Rosemarie Olorvida of Leyte (4.76m).

Mendiola also made 10.33m to top the women’s triple jump. Second was Olorvida (9.99m) followed by Hope Charity Cabuhayan (9.97).

UM’s Princess Mae Pudy threw a distance of 37.2m to bag the women's javelin throw while Lyka Catubig ruled the 10,000m walk at 47:42.23.

In the men’s event, UM’s Darling Baguisan made a long jump at 6.56m. Second was USEP’s Ian Villegas (6.52m) followed by Villanueva’s Ridel Patayan (6.42m).

Johnny Meder of UM clocked 52:45 to win the men’s 400m. Apo’s Vince Dabalos (53:44) was second followed by Joselito Hapitan (53:90) of Southeast Asia Institute of Technology Inc.

UM, composed of Meder, Adrian Cabacang, Jake Villaluz and Dharlie Baguisam, combined for 43.52 to win 4x100m.

Nathaniel Kian Jumilla of Smile Suralla and Mary Jane Pagayon of Davao City NHS emerged as the Most Valuable Players in the boys and girls’ division.

Surallah Kangaroo both ruled the team championship in Kids and Youth division with seven and 12 golds, respectively.

SEAIT topped the men’s senior while UM dominated the women’s senior. Smile won the Youth boys while DCNHS took the Youth girls.

Smile won the Kids boys while Leyte dominated the Kids girls.
