Jade Bornea will finally fight for the world title and will challenge IBF superflyweight champion Fernando Martinez of Argentina. Both fighters will engage in the undercard of the headliner between WBC interim middleweight titlist Carlos Adames of Dominican Republic fighting former WBA (Super), IBF, and IBO light middleweight king Julian Williams at a still to-be-determined venue on June 24.

Martinez, age 31, of Avellaneda, Argentina, has a record of 15-0 with eight KOs, and twice defeated former champion Jerwin Ancajas, dethroning him in their first meeting. Bornea said he will seek revenge for Ancajas’ two losses.

Martinez will fight his second defense of the IBF 115-pound title he wrested via a twelve-round unanimous decision win over then champion Ancajas on February 26, 2022.

Ancajas was among the longest reigning active champions at that time and the loss ended his almost five-year title rule with nine successful defenses in his 21-fight unbeaten streak. During their October 8, 2022 rematch, Martinez won more convincingly to successfully defend the title he wrested from the Filipino.

Bornea is under the tutelage of JC Manangquil’s SanMan stable in General Santos City. He is now training in Los Angeles under the watchful eyes of coaches Ernel Fontanilla and Ting Ariosa.

The 27-year-old Bornea, born in Arakan, Cotabato, from General Santos City, has an unbeaten record of 18-0, with 12 knockouts. He stopped Mohammed Obbadi with a third-round knockout on January 14 last year in Monterrey, Mexico.

He has been waiting as a mandatory challenger for more than a year now. He was hoping he would be lined up for the Martinez-Ancajas first bout winner, only to come out that a rematch predated his mandatory title defense.

He was given a stay-busy fight and he earned a seventh-round knockout victory over Ivan Meneses on August 19 last year in La Paz, Mexico.

Bornea had his professional debut by beating Alberto Muring via second round TKO on October 11, 2014 in Davao City.

The Milwaukee Bucks became the first team to earn an NBA playoff berth on Tuesday overcoming a late rally from the Phoenix Suns to wind up a 116-104 win in Arizona.

* * *

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 36 points together with 11 rebounds and eight assists as the Bucks chalked up their 50th win to secure their hold of the first place at the Eastern Conference standings.

Anthony Davis dominated his former team the New Orleans Pelicans as he sank 35 points and grabbed 17 rebounds on 11-18 shooting to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a win in one of their biggest games of the year.

Malik Beasley added 24 points as the visiting Lakers converted a 75-point first half into a 123-108 victory over the Pelicans. D’Angelo Russell scored 17 points and Austin Reaves added 14 as the Lakers won for the eighth time in their last 11 games.
