FORMER marathon queen Maria Estela Mamac-Diaz is already 51-years-old but she is still the favorite in the coming Davao International Marathon on March 5 at the People’s Park in Davao City.

Diaz started running last January and had her first competition last 7-Eleven Run 42-kilometer marathon last February 5 at the SM City Davao.

She finished second place to ultra-marathoner Judelyn Miranda-Fann and settled for P20,000.

“It’s my veteran style of running, still I was able to finish second in the podium,” said Diaz.

Diaz last competed in the Price Gas International Marathon held in Cagayan de Oro City last December 2011. She only finished 8th place.

Diaz has so far not participated in the 10-kilometer run but more on endurance training.

“Right now I don't know who my opponents are or if there are ultra-marathoners,” said Diaz.

Diaz, who has five children ages 29 to 6, continues her training on her own.

Her husband Placido, a former runner, doesn't interfere now with her training.

Placido is now a cyclist and has recently won the Parola de Tour in Governor Generoso in the 50 and above category. The second and third placers were veteran cyclists Glen Yap and Dominic Carpio, respectively.

Also present were marathoner Arlan Arbois and race director Roel Amabao-Ano.

“We targeting 1,200. As off today, there are 900 runners already,” said Amabao-Ano.

The 42K has 260 entries while 21K has 350, 10K 350 and 5K 200.

“Currently, the return of runners is being slowed down due to the pandemic, now there are runners who have returned to participate in the events,” said Amabao-Ano.
