Los Angeles, California – With LeBron James missing his 4th consecutive game due to a left adductor strain, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook both had double-doubles to lead the Los Angeles Lakers past the struggling San Antonio Spurs 123-92 on Sunday night (Monday morning, Philippine time) at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.
Davis led the way on both ends with 30 points on 12-for-19 field goal shooting and perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, to go along with 18 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block. Westbrook was magnificent in facilitating the offense, as he finished with 10 markers, 4 boards, 10 dimes, and 1 steal for the Lakers, who also had five other guys in double figures. Austin Reaves added 21 points on 7-for-11 field goal shooting, including 3-for-4 behind the arc.
The Spurs were without starting center Jakob Poeltl due to right knee soreness. Gorgui Dieng started in his place, but was clearly overmatched by an inspired Anthony Davis, who has scored at least 30 points and grabbed at least 16 rebounds during the Lakers’ current 3-game winning streak. Incidentally, Westbrook has also had at least 10 assists during that span. Furthermore, Austin Reaves has also scored at least 15 points, shooting just under 63% from the field and 67% from the three-point area on the same period.
Spurs leading scorer Keldon Johnson only scored 12 points on 4-for-20 field goal shooting, including an atrocious 1-for-10 from deep. He has shot just above 31% from the field and 27% from the rainbow territory during the Spurs’ current 5-game losing skid.
Devin Vassell, returning from sitting out the night before versus the Clippers, was the Spurs’ top scorer with 17 on 7-for-14 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
Spurs 73-year-old head coach Gregg Popovich was available during the pregame press conference, but missed the game after feeling unwell just before tipoff. Long-time friend and Spurs assistant coach Brett Brown called the shots for the Spurs, who dropped to a 6-12 win-loss card.
The San Antonio Spurs, will try to snap their 5-game losing skid, as they return home on Wednesday night (Thursday morning, Philippine time) to face the New Orleans Pelicans.
Meanwhile, the LA Lakers, who improved to 5 wins and 10 losses, will travel to Phoenix to face the Suns on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning, Philippine time).
