Boston Celtics 126- Philadelphia 76ers 117
The Boston Celtics beat their conference rivals Philadelphia 76ers 126-117 on opening night at the TD Garden Arena in Boston, Massachusetts, home of the Celtics. The dynamic duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown scored 35 points each for the defending Eastern Conference Champions. Malcolm Brogdon added 16 points, while Grant Williams tallied 15 points off-the-bench for the Celtics, whose interim head coach Joe Mazzulla scored his first victory as an NBA head coach.
Meanwhile, former league MVP James Harden was the top performer for Philadelphia with 35 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists, including five 3-pointers and a perfect 12-for-12 shooting from the charity stripe. Joel Embiid added a double-double performance of 26 markers, 15 boards, and 4 assists. However, Harden and Embiid had little help, as the Celtics shock troopers outscored their Sixers counterparts 34-11.
How they scored:
Celtics 126 – Tatum 35, Brown 35, Brogdon 16, Williams 15, Smart 14, Horford 6, White 2, Vonleh 2, Griffin 1
Sixers 117 – Harden 35, Embiid 26, Maxey 21, Harris 18, Tucker 6, Melton 5, Niang 3, Harrell 2, House Jr. 1
Golden State Warriors 123 – Los Angeles Lakers - 109
In the second game of the opening night extravaganza, the reigning and defending NBA champions Golden State Warriors trounced their state rivals Los Angeles Lakers 123-109 at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California, home of the Warriors. The Warriors utilized a balanced attack where even players each players scored at least 8 points.
Two-time league MVP Stephen Curry topscored for the warriors with 33 points, including 4 from deep, 6 boards, 7 dimes, 4 steals, and a blocked shot. He was also spotless in nine attempts from the freethrow line. Andrew Wiggins, fresh off signing a contract extension, scored 20 points, including 4 from beyond the arc. Curry’s splash brother Klay Thompson also added 18 markers, including 2 three-pointers for the Warriors.
Four-time league MVP LeBron James was the top performer for the losing Lakers side with 31 points, 14 boards, and 8 dimes. Returning from injury Anthony Davis added 27 markers, but only grabbed 6 boards. He also had 4 steals and 2 blocks for the
Lakers. Former league MVP Russell Westbrook had a double-double performance of 19 points and 11 boards, but only dished out 3 assists. The trio of James, Davis, and Westbrook were responsible for 12 of the Lakers’ 21 turnovers for the entire ballgame.
The disparity in both teams’ depth was apparent, as the Warriors bench outscored their Lakers counterparts 41-24.
How they scored:
Warriors 123 – Curry 33, Wiggins 20, Thompson 18, Poole 12, J. Green 8, Wiseman 8, DiVincenzo 8, Looney 7, Moody 5, D. Green 4
Lakers 109 – James 31, Davis 27, Westbrook 19, Nunn 13, Walker IV 5, Beverly 3, Ryan 3, Reaves 3, Christie 3, Pippen Jr. 2
