Headliners:
The Golden State Warriors are NBA Champions once again. Thanks to a relatively healthy lineup and the return of the other half of the dreaded Splash Brothers in Klay Thompson. While Stephen Curry remains the team’s most valuable weapon, the Warriors are awash with players who can take over on any given night. Jordan Poole, for his part, has developed into a deadly scorer and Andrew Wiggins has been an indispensable part, especially on the defensive end, for this championship squad.
Draymond Green is still Golden State’s anchor on defense and secondary facilitator on offense. He is also the team’s emotional leader. However, he sometimes gets overboard, so much so that he punched Jordan Poole in one of their practice sessions leading into the preseason. Both have expiring contracts and are negotiating with the team, asking for maximum contract extensions, along with Andrew Wiggins.
The deadline to get the deal done is on the 17th, otherwise, the player enters restricted free agency next off-season. It is highly unlikely that all three of them will get the max, as it will put the franchise into an all-time high luxury tax level of over half a billion dollars.
If only one of the three gets the extension, how will the other two react? Surely, this puts a certain cloud of uncertainty in the locker room that may spill over onto the court. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr will have his hands full trying to control the emotions, as well as the natural tendencies of the players that wouldn’t get the extension to try to play for their impending free agency rather than for the team.
Nevertheless, for as long as the Splash Brothers stay healthy and on target, the Warriors will remain as the clear favorites to repeat. James Wiseman, now healthy, adds to this team’s frontcourt depth and should serve as safety net if the Draymond Green situation goes awry.
This team is a proven entity, with basically the same roster that went all the way last season. It is highly unlikely that Green, Poole, or Wiggins will get traded midseason just because a deal for their extension can’t be done. However, it is not far fetched to consider that all three won’t get an extension and the Warriors front office will just test their market values after this dynasty hoists its 5th championship trophy… or not.
This is the final piece in this limited 30-part series preview of the upcoming 2022-2023 NBA Season.
