THE University of Mindanao Peñaplata of Samal Island is the underdog in the Inter-Collegiate Division of the ALDU Cup in the Davao del Norte Basketball League (DDNBL).

Sports coordinator and assistant coach Pedro II Segun admits that UM Peñaplata has a small line-up and that they are the underdog.

“But we believe that if we will do our best and believe in ourselves. We can do more,” said Segun.

UM Peñaplata only started training last week of September after selecting the players last month.

Only four were left from the old roster. They are Kim Christian Aliñas, 5’5; Kineth Jay Sison, 5’10; Ian Larry Colmenares, 5 '10; and John Dave Veloso, 5' 6.

The newcomers are Brix Superticioso, 6’0; Carlos Miguel Fuentes, 6’0; Carl Hendrick Estrera, 5'8; Ivan Jay Marcellones, 5’5; Jefener Forosuelo, 5’7; Greame Aiken Carungay, 5’5; Laurence Tapuroc, 5’10; Humphrey David Porton, 5’7; Elton Ibarra, 5’8; Alvin Kent Barriga, 5’10; Andy Oronan Jr., 5’10; Kenneth Joey Pacong, 5’6; and Adrian Mercado. 5’10.

The head coach is Ralph Jaffit Fernin, a former player of UM Davao Wildcats for six years. The 28-year old Fernin will be coaching for the first time in a league like DDNBL.

“But he coached our PRISAA games last 2020,” said Segun.

UM Peñaplata always joins the PRISAA league north and the last time was February 2020 in Tagum City.

UM Peñaplata, however, will still not play this week since it will be an examination.

“After the exams, then it will be followed by the intramurals,” said Segun.

UM Peñaplata is in Bracket A together with Jose Maria College, Philippine Women’s College, University of Mindanao Davao and Davao del Norte State College.

Bracket B is composed of Saint John Paul II, Davao Merchant Marine Academy, MATS Navigators, Brokenshire College and UM Tagum.

DDNBL Commissioner and SanMan Sports Foundation Chairman Arman Sañano said the games will be played in Tagum, Panabo, Carmen, Samal and Davao City.
