In this limited 30-part series, we shall be discussing each team’s latest developments, current roster, and future prospects in the upcoming 2022-2023 NBA season. For every team, we will examine bit-by-bit the important aspects that may shape its progress and provide a rough projection of how it will fare vis-à-vis its previous year’s performance and versus the rest of the league.

ATLANTA HAWKS

2021-2022 Season Win-Loss Record:

43-39

Depth Chart:

PG – Dejounte Murray, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Aaron Holiday
SG – Trae Young, Vit Krejci, Justin Holiday
SF – De’Andre Hunter, AJ Griffin, Tyrese Martin
PF – John Collins, Onyeka Okongwu, Jalen Johnson
CE – Clint Capela, Frank Kaminsky, Chris Silva

Injury Updates:

Bogdan Bogdanovic has a kneecap injury that will limit him during training camp, but he’s expected to be well and ready at the start of the season.

Head Coach:

Nate McMillan

Headliners:

The Atlanta Hawks may have found in All Star guard Dejounte Murray the backcourt tandem that franchise player Trae Young needs for the foreseeable future. In a blockbuster trade over the summer, Murray was acquired from San Antonio for a bevy of future picks and swap. The Hawks are apparently in win-now mode and they seem to have supreme confidence in their anticipated benefits of Murray’s arrival, that they were willing to mortgage their future by letting go of those future draft assets.

Atlanta’s optimism may be justified. The arrival of Murray finally allows Young to play off-ball and focus more on shot-making, rather than playmaking. Murray eases a lot of pressure on Young on both ends of the court. Murray will most-likely be the primary facilitator on offense, while also becoming the key perimeter defender on the other end.

Bogdan Bogdanovic, will most likely take on the sixth man’s role. When Dejounte Murray goes to the bench, Trae Young will serve as the point guard, while Bogdanovic replaces him at the two spot. Duke standout AJ Griffin was also drafted 16th overall by the Hawks in the recent NBA Rookie Draft. He is arguably among the most NBA-ready rookies in that draft class and should try to carve a role into the starting lineup, perhaps later in the season to supplant erstwhile starting small forward De’Andre Hunter.

John Collins and Clint Capela should continue to man the paint for the Hawks. Capela is an old school center with excellent defensive skills, while Collins is a typical modern-day big man, with guard-like agility and the ability to connect from the perimeter.

Barring any major injuries, the Hawks should be an exciting team coming into the season. Murray and Griffin improve them immensely on paper. However, it remains to be seen whether or not this translates into significantly more wins.
