Headliners:
The Indiana Pacers are rebuilding. Domantas Sabonis was arguably their best player at a relatively young age, but they traded him away. It would be a surprise if veterans Buddy Hield and Myles Turner won’t be traded anytime soon as well, to acquire more draft assets and/or young players that would fit their rebuilding timeline.
Tyrese Haliburton and Chris Duarte will now be joined by Bennedict Mathurin, the 6th overall pick in this year’s NBA Rookie Draft, to form a solid backcourt. This trio is expected to form the core of the Pacers’ backcourt in the years to come.
Indiana owns three first round picks in next year’s NBA Rookie Draft, including its own. These include a top-14 protected pick from Cleveland and a top-12 protected one from Boston. The Celtics were last season’s runner-up for the Championship, while Cleveland boosted their stock with the arrival of Donovan Mitchell. These two picks may translate in the 20s range.
Myles turner is relatively young at 26, but for a rebuilding team, his 18 million-dollar salary may be too much to spend. The same goes for Buddy Hield and his over 22 million-dollar price tag, especially that he’s already 29 years old.
The Pacers front office will be busy calling other teams for possible deals that would increase their future chances, while also reducing cost. Expect them to lose much this upcoming season, as they did in the previous one.
