Donnie Nietes is all set for his return to the ring on April 3 against Pablo Carrillo for the vacant WBO international super-flyweight title at the Caesars Palace Bluewaters in Dubai. His new promoter D4G Promotions revealed it on Tuesday, more than two years after Nietes last fought.

The 38-year-old four-weight champion has not fought since New Year’s Eve 2018 when he scored a split-decision win over Japanese Kazuto Ioka for the WBO superflyweight crown in Macau.
* * *
It will be the first fight of Nietes, whose ring record is 42 wins, one loss and five draws with 23 knockouts, under the Dubai-based promotion which signed the Murcia, Negros Occidental native last October.
* * *
Carrillo is ranked No. 8 by the World Boxing Association and his ring record is 25-7-1 with 16 KOs. Alias "El Trencito" which means the choo-choo train, age 32 years of Valledupar, Colombia, is an orthodox fighter who stands 5′ 0½″ or 154 cm.

Carrillo, who is nearly 3 inches shorter than the 5-foot-3 Nietes, also fought and lost to Ioka by unanimous decision in September 16, 2014. Another common opponent is Francis Rodriguez Jr, who stopped Carrillo in March 24, 2018. In contrast to Nietes who defeated Rodriguez by unanimous decision in July 11, 2015.

"He has sparred over 100 rounds and is just a few pounds off the limit," said Edito Villamor as quoted by Roy Luarca of Rappler. Nietes trains at the Villamor Brothers Boxing Gym in Mandaue, run by Edito and his brother Edmund.
* * *
Carrillo's fight with Nietes will be his first outside Colombia since December 29, 2016 when he knocked out Thai fighter Jakpan Sangtong in a fight in Osaka, Japan.
* * *
Ironically, Carillo’s last fight with a Filipino foe was against Nietes’ namesake, Donny Mabao, who the Colombian defeated by a unanimous decision in April 17, 2016.
* * *
D4G Promotions, which is promoting the card together with Top Rank and Queensberry Promotions, announced that Nietes' long-awaited ring return will take place on the undercard of Jamel Herring's defense of his WBO junior lightweight title against Carl Frampton.
* * *
Carrillo has lost four of his last seven bouts but has never been knocked out in his 10-year career. He last fought in August 23, 2019, a corner 5th round stoppage win over Luis Golindano of Venezuela for the World Boxing Association Fedebol super-flyweight championship.
* * *
Carrillo has fought 175 rounds in 33 bouts with a 48.48% KO rate compared to Nietes who competed in 358 rounds in 48 fights with a 47.92% KO rate.

WBC Pesident Mauricio Sulaiman thinks the Juan Francisco Estrada vs. Chocolatito Gonzalez rematch could have decided either way and could have ended a draw.
* * *
"It was a historic fight between Estrada and Chocolatito, a fight that could have been a draw or won by either of them," Sulaiman was quoted by Jose Luis Camarillo.
* * *
"It was a fight that goes beyond the judging, goes beyond the outcome, it was a classic fight, an epic fight, which places everything in favor of world boxing, of Latin boxing," added the WBC Prez.

A night that will honor the first-family of Mexican boxing, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Omar Chavez will happen on Saturday night, June 19th, at The Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico.
* * *
Tribute to The Kings will be live on pay-per-view and will headline a special exhibition bout between Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. making his final ring appearance against Hector Camacho Jr. Camacho will be honoring the legacy of his late Hall of Fame father Hector "Macho" Camacho.

Stephen Curry established another record in the Warriors history. The extremely popular shooter now holds the title as the team’s all-time assists leader with 4,856 after surpassing the previous record-holder, Guy Rodgers, on Monday against the Lakers.
* * *
Rodgers, a Hall of Fame guard who played during the franchise’s Philadelphia and San Francisco years in the 1960s, had led the team’s assists list for 55 years before Curry finally passed him.
* * *
Curry now ranks first all-time for the Warriors in assists, 3-pointers and free-throw percentage. The two-time former NBA MVP is also nearing Wilt Chamberlain and Chris Mullin for the franchise records in points and steals, respectively.

Eric Moussambani made a memorable moment in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the first time he had ever seen an Olympic-sized pool and only months after he had learned swimming. He swam his heat of the 100 m freestyle on September 19 in the Olympic slowest time of 1:52.72.
* * *
The Equitorial Guinea native gained entry into the Olympics through a wildcard for athletes from developing countries who do not have advanced training facilities.
* * *
Moussambani obviously had difficulty finishing the race, but he won his heat after both his competitors were disqualified due to false starts. While his time was still too slow to advance to the next round, he set a new personal best and a national record for his country. His perseverance wowed fans all over the world.
