Whatever happened to Luisito Espinosa, a two division world champion who is hands down among the top stars of Philippine Boxing?

Espinosa, a bamboo picker from Tondo and a son of a waiter in Malacañan during President Ferdinand Marcos' time, hit it big in 1989 with a smashing 1st round knockout of the sensational Kaokur Galaxy of Thailand to capture the WBA world bantamweight crown.

Tall for his division, the stylish and fearless Espinosa made several successful defenses but later lost the 118 pound world crown to Israel Contreras at the Araneta Coliseum in 1991.

He faded as expected, but next they knew, he moved up and in 1995 captured the WBC featherweight crown with a conquest of Mexican Manuel Medina in Japan.

Espinosa would celebrate that world title with an unforgettable performance before a huge homecrowd in the Battle of Manila Bay where he disposed of Mexican Cesar Sotto in June of 1996 at the Rizal Park.

Before that victory, Espinosa did drop by Guadaljara in Mexico in March to defend his WBC belt against Alejandro "Cobrita" Gonzales, and avenged and excruciating loss in 1993 against the tough and vicious Mexican warrior.

The defense in Guadalajara turned into one of Espinosa's most memorable fights.
